Spravato™ is a prescription nasal spray, FDA-approved to treat adults with Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD) and is also approved for those with Suicidal Ideation.
It is a fast-acting treatment for depression and is monitored in the office for a continuous period of time by a healthcare provider.
Spravato™ can only be delivered in a REMS-certified healthcare facility with the guidance and presence of a healthcare provider.
Patients who suffer from Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD) and have not responded well to at least two medications for depression from at least two classes of drugs.
Spravato™ is also approved for adults with Suicidal Ideation.
Currently, Spravato™ is not approved for patients under the age of 18.
Spravato™ works differently than other antidepressants by targeting and affecting the neurotransmitter glutamate. This neurotransmitter plays a significant role in the communication between brain cells and is said to help regulate mood and emotions.
How long does it take to establish a change? Rapid results are one of the most beneficial outcomes of this treatment plan. Instead of months to see results, patients often report a marked change in weeks, if not sooner.
Spravato™ is self-administered in the office treatment room alongside a care team member and administered when a healthcare provider is present.
Spravato™ can only be administered in a certified healthcare facility that practices the Spravato™ Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS). Each patient is enrolled in the REMS program, which will ensure:
When administered in a healthcare setting, Spravato™ is monitored by the healthcare team for two hours each treatment session.
The initial treatment schedule is twice a week for four weeks. The patient can then be tapered to maintenance therapy, which is usually once a week. Treatment frequency is then customized to the patient's response, with patients tapering to every other week or once a month.
Yes, each patient receiving Spravato™ should plan for a family member or caregiver to drive them home after treatment. Do NOT drive, operate heavy equipment or machinery, or do anything that requires you to be completely alert after taking Spravato™. It is recommended that you wait until the next day to participate in activities after a restful sleep.
Some people taking Spravato™ get nausea and vomiting. We recommend that you refrain from eating for at least two hours before treatment and avoid drinking for at least 30 minutes prior to treatment.
Our treatment room is designed for calm and relaxation. You can listen to music, bring your own tablet or iPad for entertainment, or listen to calming motivational inspirations.
Many insurance companies do cover Spravato™. It depends on your insurance provider and on an individual's policy.
We work in our office to help obtain prior authorization for your treatment. If your insurance does not cover treatment, you can pay out of pocket for the services.
